Gite Holidays in France

Planning and itinerary tips for group trips to France.
Share your experiences of holidays among our Gallic cousins. I have been organising youth outings to Europe for five years and have find new obstacles each year. By setting up this group we can pool our knowledge and avoid some of the mishaps that make the difference between a good experience and an outstanding one.

Like to join your group but not very keen on France, can we open it to the whole wide world?

Sounds good. Have been on many gite holidays with groups ranging from 4 to 11 (family). Can give some advice on areas to visit. Travelling there, stopovers, shopping, feeding, places of interest and mostly wonderful gite owners.

Planning a new gite holiday. Gite secured for 10 in Brittany. Question is - which is the best crossing to take??! Crossing from Portsmouth to Caen takes 6 hours with 4 hours drive and 179 miles to cover. Crossing from Portsmouth to St. Malo is overnight (can get cabins) arriving at 8 am and only a 2 hour drive and 79 miles to cover. What do you think?? Two cars going - one driver inexperienced with driving in France - the other unsure about overnight crossings!! How can I resolve this?!!!

Holiday in France approaching fast. Half the family travelling on the Friday night and the other on the Saturday night. Everything resolved. Taking the Portsmouth to St. Malo route (sleeping overnight on the ferry). Hoping that grandad will come over for a few days to rest his weary bones!!! :o)

What a wonderful holiday. The gite was perfect, the pool just right for the family and the area in Brittany was so accessible to a variety of activities for young and old. There were trips to the seaside, the lakeside, chateaux, fantastic food, the fantastic aquarium in Brest and mind-blowing son et lumiere (400 cast members) at the Abbey of Bon Repos. Wouldn't recommend the long crossing to St. Malo again, but it did mean a shorter drive to the gite. *****
