You are enjoying the first beams of the sun and the fresh fragrance of the blooming trees. But when you enter the kitchen, there is a strange smell of rotten food. Thinking where it could be from, you can’t think of any reason, because you clean the kitchen every day. At one moment you hear your fridge growling- that is its call for help. Moreover, it is not a secret that people consume way more meat in the winter than in the summer. By giving the fridge a good clean, you will improve its efficiency, smell and lessen the electricity bills.

The cleaning of the fridge is a chore, often neglected by many people. The reason is probably because they are led by the motto- no stain, no pain! But as one of the most used kitchen appliance for storing food, the fridge needs great attention. If we didn’t manage to convince you so far that the sanitation of the fridge is a necessity, we would like to let you know that this may extend its life at least three times.

So, now it’s time to start with the cleaning part. The first step is to switch off the fridge from the electricity. In that way, you will be able to defrost it and clean it from the layers of ice. Then empty the whole fridge, including the freezer if it has such. The cleaning won’t take too much time, so don’t worry that the food will spoil.

Leave the fridge open till all the ice melts. Keep in mind that there will be some water, so it might be a good idea to use a cloth or towel on the floor, just in front of the fridge. While waiting, you may sort out the food and throw away everything, which is out-of-date or you don’t consider to eat it anymore.

Then take out the removable parts of the fridge like shelves and drawers and wash them. You can use just normal dishwashing detergent. Then rinse with warm water and leave them to dry. Wipe them with a towel, to absorb any moist. Damp a cloth in a distilled vinegar and wipe the parts again. This will disinfect them and eliminate any odours. After that rinse with lukewarm water and leave them to dry.

You can also use kitchen paper or towel to absorb the moist, but you need to clean the interior and exterior part of the fridge anyway, so the time will be enough to air dry.

For the interior part, use the same method as for the removable parts of the fridge. Use a sponge and soapy water and don’t forget to squeeze the sponge on regular bases and dip it again in the water, so that the cleaning will have an effect. Scrub gently all the walls, ceiling and wall of the refrigerator and then wipe it down with a clean towel, damped in clean water. After that, use a towel or a cloth to apply vinegar and wipe it down with kitchen paper. Wimbledon cleaning agency says it is even not needed to clean the vinegar, since it will evaporate and leave a fresh smell.

If you are not a fan of the vinegary smell, just replace the vinegar with lemon juice. It will do the same job of disinfecting and deodorising. Since the lemon is a fruit in its core, it may be a bit sticky. That’s why you definitely need to wipe down with clean water.

Repeat all the steps for the exterior part of the fridge. But here, you need to take into account the surface of the fridge, otherwise you may scratch it easily. For the enamelled surfaces, the best decision is to use multi-purpose cleaners and for the stainless steel surfaces- diluted white vinegar. To avoid any risk of scratches, the best is to use a soft microfiber cloth or cotton towel. And… it’s done. Return the food back in the fridge and don’t forget to switch it on.

The cleaning of the fridge will do you and your budget only good. Lesser electricity bills, safe storage for the food, no unpleasant odours and the best- extending the life of the expensive kitchen appliance. You will have enough time to contemplate the sky and enjoy the sun, now it’s time to do some work!
