Before getting a total ankle replacement in Las Vegas, you must prepare for the recovery period. Total ankle replacement surgery involves the replacement of injured ankle bones with artificial parts. Even though the procedure is relatively new, it is known to be highly effective. It helps improve mobility and reduce pain after an accident, or for those with arthritis.

The Recovery Period is about six weeks from the day of the procedure. For the first six weeks, you need to wear a splint or a boot. Moving around is difficult so you will need help. During the first two weeks, doctors suggest that you minimize movement as much as you can. Physical therapy exercises are also part of the healing process. Generally, the recovery period varies from one person to another based on their general health condition, age, and other variables.

Preparing for the Recovery Process

Preparing for the Recovery Process

Even though the recovery process isn’t difficult, it does require some planning. Some of the best ways to plan include:

Preparing Your Home:

The most important part of the process is to prepare your home environment. Ensure that it is easily accessible at least for the first several weeks of recovery. Arrange to have assistance for your daily chores and transportation. Since you can’t walk after the surgery, keep the following tips in mind;

·        If your home is multi-level, arrange for one-floor living.

·        To make showering easier, consider having a chair in your shower or tub.

·        Get rid of the obstacles and tripping hazards on the floor.

·        Think about items that you may need throughout the day and keep them handy. Set them in strategic locations where you can access them without much movement.

Make Transportation Arrangements:

Ensure that you have transportation arrangements for getting home from the hospital after your initial visit. You also need transportation for follow-up appointments. You cannot drive during the recovery period, so ask a relative or close friend to help get to your important appointments, or contact a special transportation service that can accommodate your situation.

How to Speed-Up the Recovery Process

How to Speed-Up the Recovery Process

There are a few things that you can do to speed up your recovery process after total ankle replacement surgery. However, you should not try to rush the recovery process too far. The first step towards a speedy recovery is trying to keep the swelling down. This is especially important within the first two weeks. The best way to do it is to keep your feet elevated as often as you can. Use pillows to prop up your feet and keep them above the level of your heart.

When you leave the hospital, you will be given the tools you need for recovery. This includes splints, boots, and/or crutches. These give your ankles the support they need for correct and quick recovery.

Your doctor will recommend physical therapy exercises to accompany the healing process. They will help your new joint function well and ease the transition of getting back to your daily life and responsibilities. Keep close contact with your doctor until you have healed completely.

If you have been dealing with arthritis or chronic ankle pain, total ankle replacement may be a good idea. Even though it is an effective period, it has a long recovery period and you must prepare for it adequately.
