Career experts will always encourage you to pursue what you love. This often means thinking of different paths to follow based on passion. What most people don’t realise, however, is that it is quite challenging to identify one’s passion and turn it into a career. This is because you will need to take time to understand what you really want and establish whether it will be beneficial to you. You also have to think hard before making any life changing decision to avoid regrets in future.
1. Determine what your motivation is
Making a career change takes boldness, which means that you need to determine what you’re looking to gain from the new job. Although following your passion allows you to do something you enjoy, it may not always be fulfilling in other aspects of life. Before making the career changes, therefore, it is imperative to establish whether you need less working hours, more pay, a better work environment or different job responsibilities? In whichever case, you should be able to establish the success you expect to attain in the new job as opposed to the old job.
2. Salary and benefit packages
Whilst some career advisors warn against looking at the pay when picking a career, it is critical to understand that you have a future to plan. As such, you must consider the pay you’ll get from your new job and the responsibilities it comes with. This is because a well-paying job may sometimes have responsibilities that are too demanding. You should be able to establish that the duties you’ll be performing are proportional to the pay.
Besides taking into account the salary you’ll be enjoying in your new job, it is also important to consider the benefit package that comes with it. Does it include a retirement savings plan, a health cover, paid-for vacations, bonuses, etc.? The new job should be able to address most of the financial needs that the previous one didn’t meet.
3. Analyse the company’s growth pattern
Although most interviewees are afraid of asking their prospective employers questions, making a career change is a huge deal. As such, you will need to assess the growth of the company and consider its ability to advance in the near future. Asking the potential employer where he sees the company in the next 5 years is okay. You don’t want to leave your current job only to move into a company that offers short-term job security.
4. Consider all the available job opportunities
Prior to making any career change, take time to review all the potential job opportunities at your disposal. With today’s high internet speeds, this task has become simpler because you can narrow down your search to the specific job titles or duties that you would like to explore. If you have a particular job in mind, you could review the company offering it by assessing its mission, vision, and goals. This will help you determine whether or not the job is suitable for you.
5. Are you willing to start over?
This is the first question that should come to mind when making a career change that takes to a new field. Over the years, you’ve obviously established a strong reputation that has earned you several contacts among clients and colleagues. So, are you willing to let this all go if it cannot be integrated into the new job and start over?
Consider the skill set you have and match it to the duties and responsibilities that come with the new job. Even the most learned professionals require some training and more education to make a career change. This means that you should only move to a new job if you have enough confidence in your ability to learn new things.
Once you have factored in all the above considerations, you’re ready for a career change.
