Dental hygiene is probably one of the most important factors in keeping yourself healthy. Taking good care of your teeth will help you live long, healthy and a pain-free life. In order to keep your teeth healthy, it is important to develop a good dental care routine that can efficiently tackle the plaque and bacteria nesting in your gums. In addition to maintaining a good oral hygiene, taking careful consideration of what you eat ties in with healthy gums too. You should always brush your teeth at least two times a day- once in the morning and once before you go to bed. There is always a longing debate whether a manual toothbrush is better than an electronic one. Fluoride toothpaste

When brushing your teeth, always ensure that you are using fluoride toothpaste as this protects the enamel and makes you less likely to get cavities. It is important that the toothpaste has enough fluoride so it can be effective when brushing. Some toothpastes only contain a small amount of fluoride and this won’t protect your teeth as much as you need.  The amount you should be checking is at least 1,350 – 1,500 ppm; anything less than that will be ineffective at protecting your teeth. In regards to children, they can use the full strength toothpastes, the one containing the correct amount of fluoride; however, you need to make sure that they spat it out once they have finished brushing.

Flossing

It’s quite surprising that a lot of people don’t include this in their dental routine, but flossing isn’t just for dislodging food wedged between your teeth, regular flossing may also reduce gum disease and bad breath as it removes plaque that forms along the gum line. Flossing is really important because it tackles areas where a toothbrush can’t reach. As a result, if you don’t floss, food, plaque and bacteria will build up in those hidden reclusive areas of the gums.

 Even brush the tongue

The surface of the tongue can sometimes be uneven. This means that food particles and bacteria can often get trapped there. This then becomes a source of bacteria which get transferred to your teeth. Some toothbrushes come with a special ‘tongue brusher’ which helps remove the bacteria building up in your tongue. Make sure though that you scrape gently preventing any injury to your tongue. Once you feel you have cleaned it to the best of your ability, simply rinse and wash your mouth out to get rid of the debris and bacteria.

One of the most popular, cost draining, life-threating habits in humanity. Smoking is really bad for your health, especially your oral health. Smoking will stain your teeth, give you bad breath and make you more likely to get gum disease or cancer in the mouth.
