How to Use E-Cigarettes to Quit Smoking

Most smokers have come to a point of wishing they weren't so addicted to nicotine. We've tried everything from the patch to the gum to going cold turkey-- but more often than not, most of us relapse.

Cigarette addiction is no joke. It has been found to be more powerful than hard drug addictions to morphine or heroin. Whether this is because of its cultural acceptance, accessibility, or just the nature of nicotine, one thing is for sure-- kicking cigarettes can really kick you in the butt.

Quitting Smoking With E-Cigarettes 101

Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, are rechargeable smoking devices in the shape of a cigarette or pipe. These devices are filled with cartridges filled with "juice" (available for purchase at that contain nicotine, flavoring, and water.

When one "vapes", the liquid juice is converted into water vapor and exhaled.

E-cigarettes do still contain nicotine, but they also do not contain the laundry list of deadly carcinogens typically found in a pack of regular cigarettes, making them an excellent alternative or tool to kick smoking for good.

Just simply switching may not do the trick, though. It helps to follow certain steps to quit smoking entirely.

1. Make a list and read it often.

Intention is a big part of quitting smoking or kicking any unhealthy habit.

Make a list of all the reasons you want to quit smoking. Also, include things you could do (or things you would stop doing) if you were smoke-free.

Read this list often when you're feeling the urge to indulge in an actual cigarette.

If you feel reservations about vaping, also make a list of things you want to know and do the appropriate research to dispell your fears.

2. Get rid of those packs.

It's a very good feeling to toss your cigarettes in the trash. Be sure to tear them up first, though.

If you're not comfortable with this, hiding your cigarettes or just keeping them out of eye's view can be helpful. Putting them in a difficult spot to reach, like on top of a cupboard, can motivate you to not bother with them.

3. Figure out the right nicotine level for you.

Juice for vape pens and e-cigarettes come in varying degrees of nicotine. If you want to properly ween yourself off, try sampling different levels to see what is satisfying.

4. Figure out the right e-cigarette device for you.

E-cigarettes come in a wide range of types, including:

  • Vape pens
  • Disposable e-cigarettes
  • APVs (Advanced Personal Vaporizers)
  • Mini e-cigarettes
